Welcome to Music Therapy Monday 011722 friends!

First off, the Colorado Springs team is slowly and surely recovering so we’d like to thank everyone for their flexibility last week and this coming week. One nice thing about being a local business is the sense of community and we can’t be more thankful!

Today we’re dedicating our time to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and hope you take time to reflect and learn.

As we’ve mentioned when explaining various music therapy examples, music often carries an incredible amount of emotional and spiritual meaning. Often times even serving as an inspiration and a unifying voice to the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, “The freedom songs are playing a vital role in our struggle. They give the people new courage and a sense of unity.” Additionally, MLK was known for his love and inspiration from jazz and gospel, even using them in many of his speeches. Below are the lyrics to the gospel “We Shall Overcome”. This served as a rallying cry for Civil Rights and a theme in numerous of MLK’s sermons. We encourage everyone to read, reflect, or even look up a recording.

“We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day.

We’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand,
We’ll walk hand in hand, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day

We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day

We shall all be free, we shall all be free,
We shall all be free, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day

We are not afraid, we are not afraid,
We are not afraid, TODAY
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day

We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome some day.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day.”

Thanks for joining us and we hope the reflection and remembrance doesn’t stop here!
